There is only one way to describe this movie ...
It's a turd.
It's absolutely uninteresting.
The acting is as bad as the scripts.
It's not a documentary, it's not an adventure, its not a romantic comedy, it's not even a comedy.
It's barely Sci-fi!
Oh, did I tell you they have a ping-pong table on the space station?
Did I tell you that nearly all of the female actresses run their mouths continually while talking to one another on the space station?
If you do watch it, let me know how many times that the Captain of the space station acts like an ass. I'd like to see if your total matches mine.
Also if anyone can figure out what the point of this movie was, other than one and a half hours of total boredom, please let me know! |

Uh-oh... I must have gotten distracted before I went to remove it from my queue. Now it's on its way in the mail. _________________ ...or not...

I'll give you a dollar if you can watch more than 30 minutes in one sitting.
This movie has it all:
A bored little girl
A pot smoking, guitar playing hippy
A battery operated robot doctor named Doctor Bot
A large number of very uninteresting people
A large number of argumentative people
A large number of women who never shut up |

I watched it last night — ALL the way to the end.
The most boring waste of film I seen in my short life!
(And I don't want the $1.00 — I'd feel that I'd be cheating YOU!) |

Here's how it went . . . I made it through 57 minutes before I started dozing off. (That's where I had to rewind . . . oops; obsolete term . . . back up to in order to find the last thing I remembered seeing.) Coincidentally, that's about the first place anything you could consider sci-fi based actually began showing up . . . if you discount the beginning of the errant asteroid's journey. Then about ten minutes later I had to pause the DVD to get a snack because I was getting really hungry. So I'm claiming my reward.

I'll confess a guilty pleasure. I was actually enjoying the humor; especially Dr. Bot, and that little housecleaning robot in the background, scraping the crayon marks off the wall . . . at least up to the point where they showed the Captain figuring out how Dr. Bot was programmed to respond to key words. That wasn't necessary.

It was a comedy set in space. The humor (or the plot in general) had very little to do with that setting.

I didn't see a ping-pong table. I did see an air hockey table.

I totally missed any point if there was one. The only point I got was that the station's number 76 was probably a reference to 1976, which seemed to be the time period their clothing came from. I don't know why, unless perhaps the characters were all pretty much self-absorbed; characteristic of that period.
What I'm still working on is why anybody thought it was necessary to make this movie at this time. It just seems to be a kind of retro effort to make something that looks like sci-fi that might have come out of the '70s ("found footage", if you will) . . . the clothing; the shiny, almost featureless CGI representations of the "miniatures"; the minimalist interiors, devoid of any dirt or wear, etc.
~~~~~~~~~~
Somewhat later . . .
I've looked over a few reviews from people who rated the movie favorably to see if they had some insights to share. I'm still left with my unanswered question: "Why?" _________________ ...or not...
Alright ... let me fill you in on what I know so far:
Space Station 76 is based on an alternate universe where mankind never outgrew the 70's.
Space Station 76 was originally written as a Broadway play and had previously been performed on stage.
Unfortunately the stage play did not transfer well to a movie (in my opinion).
I was paying so little attention that I thought they were playing ping-pong. I guess air hockey is better suited to be played in space rather than ping-pong.
You could tell it was the 70's style era in the first few minutes when there was a push-in cigarette lighter on the dash board of the space station pilot's console.
Does anyone actually still drink Harvey Wallbangers?
Finally, I'll just bet we haven't seen the last of Space Station 76 ... It'll probably be made into an opera next.
(A Space Opera ... get it?) |
I kind of liked it. Dr. Bot makes me laugh. So does one character's failure at various suicide attempts.
Otherwise, this one's not a comedy. It's bleak and glacial -- The Ice Storm meets Space 1999.
I am a sucker for 70's SF, and so I adore the lovingly-recreated disco/shag carpet feel of the picture. YMMV. |
At least now we know what happens if you thaw out a frozen pet ... it's plainly written on the container. |
The constant mouth-running is no doubt an artifact of its stage play origins. Stage plays are essentially dialog... also monolog if you go back far enough. _________________ ...or not...
Hmmm. Interesting. Dialog now, and monologs if you go back far enough.
Does that mean if you go back even farther, stage plays would be "zerologs"? You know, silent plays before they inventing talking?
Good lord . . . that means all theater evolved from a common ancestor!
Exactly, Bud!
Social anthropologists believe that different tribes or bands of Neanderthals who did not speak a commonly recognized dialect would act out what they wanted to convey to each other.
In more plain language, they mimed.
(Or as Eadie just told me: "That's OK. No else 'mime-ed'!) _________________ Common Sense ISN'T Common |
So "Charades" were invented by Neanderthals!
Amazing! |
