Bud and I have been watching Star Trek (the Original Series) together (using our laptops) and we noticed that Captain James T. Kirk had his choice of shirts.
There are a handful of the show's 79 episodes in which Shatner's Kirk showed up to the bridge wearing an over-wrapped olive green drab tunic that displayed his rank insignia on his shoulders. The green tunic that Kirk would occasionally bust out was the original series only distinctive style identifying him for command. This is what Bud and I call his sh***y shirt.....oops.
The braid was later moved to the edge of his sleeves. His neckline was trimmed in black cloth. Bud and I call this his casual shirt. I like this shirt just fine.
His default yellow shirt was worn by the other male bridge crew members.
Anyway, it is interesting he had casual shirt options.
Look how good Riker looked in the original style shirt.

Bulldogtrekker is being modest and diplomatic. He knows full-well that I always refer to the two sissy-looking green wrap-a-round garments as Kirk's "gay" shirts.
I hate 'em, and I can't imagine why the wardrobe guy ever thought they were a good idea. Senior officers on navel vessels wear the official uniforms — not something that had them humming this song in their heads all day!

I liked his green tunics just fine. I did think it odd that his insignia badge on the one was located down on the bottom of his shirt & the delta shape laying on its side.
I've read that the green uniform shirt was created due to Bill's expanding waistline in the second season. |

Yes, I remember hearing the same thing about Mr. Shatner's gaining weight during the middle of the seasons and the wrap shirt was intended to hide his weight gain. I could not find the source of the information.

The episodes I've watched recently from the 3rd season with Bulldogtrekker while chatting on Facebook have included several episodes without the green wrap-around, and Shatner seems to look just fine.
In fact, in The Paradise Syndrome we see Shatner bear-chested as a macho "Indian", and he looks pretty trim!
So, I think the claim is totally bogus. _________________ ____________
