Imagine my surprise last evening when I watched this movie (as a favor to Bulldogtrekker so we could discuss it on Facebook while sharing it) when I discovered that it's actually the best of the TOS cast feature films!
Hell's bells, I've been critical of this movie for years, based on my negative reaction to it when I saw it in 1989 at a drive-in with my family. I disliked the idea of a charismatic Vulcan (Spock's half brother) who had the mystic ability to recruit followers just by helping them "face their fears".
It all seemed like hokem to me in 1989.
But last night when I watched an EPIX channel DVR, the movie came together in an astounding manner. The story, the dialog, the humor, the action . . . even the photography was absolutely gorgeous!
And the score by Jerry Goldsmith was, of course, excellent.
Suddenly I realized that The Wrath of Khan with its long list of plot holes and illogical story elements was inferior to this movie AND the other Nicolas Myer direct Star Trek film, The Undiscovered Country.
And this one directed by William Shatner!
Bulldogtrekker and I were barely three-fourths of the way through it when I went online and ordered the Blu-ray from Amazon.
I suspect that part of my enthusiasm came from the fact that just a few days ago I suffered through DVRs of both The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home. I had to skip ahead often during both films, because I remembered the movies well, and I was appalled by the fact that they were even worse than I recalled!
But The Final Frontier was a true delight, and it has become my favorite TOS feature. If you've seen it before and didn't care for it, consider giving it another chance.
I did . . . and it was a revelation!

I see a pattern emerging here. If you (Bud) watch a movie the first time and don't like it, watch it again later and you will. If you do like a movie on first viewing, never watch it again, as that will spoil it for you.
(But I will try ST V again, since most of the "sci-fi" I enjoyed as a kid seems like caca now.) _________________ ...or not...

Yeah, you're right. I bought all these DVD's because I'd watched them once and liked them . . . and now I don't dare watch them again!
Hey, do you want 'em?

That's one big collection of regret, Bud.
But I noticed the one wire rack in the first photo...

Is that designed to hold either VHS or DVD cases? So when you replace all your old tapes with DVDs, you don't gain any shelf space? _________________ ...or not...

Sorry, Wayne, but you're mistaken. The two racks I have with that design are meant to leave a little space above and below each DVD to make them easier to pull out.
Look closer at the DVDs of X-Men, X-Men: Origins, and Spider-Man and you'll see that there is a wire framework above AND below each DVD. The actual slots are only wide enough for DVDs. _________________ ____________

I had envisioned the VHS cases going in endwise. _________________ ...or not...

A VHS tape is too thick to fit, regardless of which way you turn it.
When I said "wide" I meant the vertical width. I guess I should have said "high". That's why I said "there is a wire framework above and below each DVD".
So, each slot is just HIGH enough to hold a DVD. Even a double-thick DVD case (like one of the smaller box sets) won't go into the slots.
The extra space above and below each case allows you to get your fingers in there to remove the DVD. Those racks were the first two I ever bought, way back 2002. All the racks I've bought since then don't separate the DVD's like those two. _________________ ____________

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on ST:TFF, Bud.
It remains my least fave ST film since the day I went to the theater to see it in its original release. |

I was all set to watch it last night, but the wife went to bed uncharacteristically early (~8:00), so I had to do quiet work on the computer instead. Try again tonight. _________________ ...or not...

My favorite because of two scenes. The one with McCoy and his Father, and Kirk's, I need my pain speech. What would have made it perfect is if when on the run from "God", Kirk enters a cave and finds out that "God" is actually a computer!
My sister had a friend that worked at Paramount at the time, he was visiting and told us that Shatner went through Hell to get this movie made. First Paramount wasn't sure they wanted to do anymore original cast films, and so cut the budget. Shatner was battling Roddenberry, who started having second thoughts about the story line, as was the studio. Nimoy was feeling his oats after directing number 4 (he told us that Nicholas Meyer had actually directed a lot of no. 4 as a favor to Paramount). A big chunk of the budget went to making a new bridge, because the NextGen was using the old one as the battle bridge, and wouldn't let the movie borrow it, because they may need it. There were others, but these are the ones I remember.

Ummm . . . maybe it wasn't the movies fault. Maybe you shouldn't have watched it so close to nap time, Grampa! _________________ ____________

I have to say that I found this movie very satisfing and enjoyable. After the round of Klingon battles and "epic" cliffhanging adventures of the previopus movies I found this to be more of an "episode" self contained story that had touches of all the best attributes of Trek that I'd come to enjoy. |
