Wikipedia has an interesting article called List of box office bombs which shows the titles of highly expensive films which turned into money pits for the unhappy Hollywood execs who gave them the green light!
Plenty of the movies on the list are undeniably bad . . . but nine of the titles are sci-fi/fantasy films I happen to like!
Click on the link above, peruse list, and see if you too have a few favorites that didn't get the love they deserved from the great unwashed masses. Proudly post the titles of these maligned motion pictures right here and then defend their honor with that proverbial pen which is mightier than the proverbial sword!
And while you're at it, feel free to call me insane for liking some of the movies below! Tell us why you think they sucked like a Hoover and why good old Bud needs a CAT scan if he actually likes such losers!
Strike a blow for cinema integrity! Defend those poor unappreciated productions — or attack the offending films which got just what they deserved! (In your own humble opinion, of course).
Here's my own list of Unloved Box Office Land Mines!

I want to give a shout out to THE PHANTOM from 1996.
It had a $45m budget and grossed just over $17m.
I like it...Roger Ebert liked it. Not a lot of other people liked it.
It's a gorgeous looking movie on Blu-ray. For years it was OOP and expensive but I think it has been re-released, so buy it. I never liked Billy Zane before this movie but his performance and dedication to the role really impressed me. It costars the lovely Kristy Swanson who, it turns out, is also a very cool person in real life. |

I love Disney's 1991 period superhero film "The Rocketeer."
Lavish budget, terrific story & wonderful cast. Top notch visual/special FX. Not sure as to why but it just did not become the smash it deserved at the box office.
Sequels should have been this movie's fate. |

If only the heroine had been a Bettie Page look-alike, to keep in the spirit of the original comics. But Rocketeer continues to appear in comics, so maybe he will fly onto the big screen again some time!

The Shadow came out the same year as The Rocketeer. Not as wonderful a movie as TR but not bad either.
It died at the box office, again, unsure as to why it did not make as it had superb production values.
I always had the fantasy that if both movies had been smash hits they could have done a terrific Rocketeer meets the Shadow film where they battle Nazis together. Suppose that would have been tricky to pull off, as Rocketeer was Disney & Shadow was Columbia.
But hey, who knows? Studios have been known to collaborate with one another in the past on producing a movie together. |

There have been some interesting team-ups, or cross-overs, in comics lately, even when the publishers involved are aligned with different studios. After all, if it's going to make money, for the businessmen involved what's not to like? Batman is currently involved with The Shadow, after a recent encounter with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Justice League has met the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, while there has been a series in which Kirk and friends from Star Trek get to visit the Planet of the Apes, and also, separately, have teamed up with Green Lantern. And I see that a certain massive primate called Kong is liable to visit Planet of the Apes too... where comics lead, movies may well follow! |
