Been working on this repop by Polar Lights of the old Aurora Spindrift kit. This was the hero suborbital transport from Irwin Allen's 1960's TV show "Land of the Giants".
Anyway, I've just finished decaling her and applying two coats of gloss lacquer to seal the decals...

Nice stern glossiness:

And the beauty shot:

I'm after more of a satin finish though so she'll get a single shot of Dullcote to bring down the shine.
After that I'll attach her to the metal display tube before wiring her to the base. This model lights up and has a full interior complete with scratch made passengers and crew. The engines even pulse up and down like on the show.
If you guys (and gals) want to see pics of the crew let me know!

Beautiful work!
I always thought the Spindrift had a sort of Art Deco-Neo Futurist kind of look. Your work really makes it pop! _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |

In an old Star Log interview, Paul Zastupnevich said that the Spindrift is upside down to how it was designed. The designer brought Irwin Allen a study model of the Spindrift. IA took one look and turned it upside down saying no, it goes this way. I presume the original configuration was to make lighting the inside set easier, as they could leave the roof off. Also the door is on the opposite side than it should be.

I suppose the original design might have been different enough from this final design that it could be inverted without looking quite so horrible wrong.
Something like this.
BY gum, I almost like this better! Maybe those guys were right after all. _________________ ____________

Bud consider this. They built at least a partial full-scale Spindrit (I don't ever recall seeing the left side, or the stern) on the soundstage. They knew that the mock-up was going to have an interior so you could see the actors in the ship. Which would be easier to light? A mock-up with a round, enclosed roof? Or a mock-up with a wide, gently curved roof that you could leave off for the lighting rig?

The design of the Spindrift looked like a pop-art mashup of the Proteus from FANTASTIC VOYAGE and the flying sub from VTTBOTS. There are a few good views of it online.

I cut up pieces of these figures:
Modern Urban Resisters (aka Terrorists) by trekriffic, on Flickr
Then pieced together the legs and arms, resculpted the heads and faces using an exacto knife and AVES sculpting clay, puttied and carved to the right body shape or size and added clothing. A multimedia creation every one. Primed with lacquer and brushed with mixes of Testors enamel paint:
Here's Betty in progress. Sometimes I used parts from the model kit like Betty's lower legs and arms:

Poor Fitzhugh really needs to pull himself together:

Something I forgot. I don't remember his name, but the Spindrift was designed by the man that designed the Flying Sub. It wasn't Harper Goff.

According to internet sources, the designer of the Flying Sub was William Creber, while the Spindrift was designed by Rodger A. Maus (who also designed the Space Pod from Lost in Space). |

Of course you have to have the safety instructions in every seat back pocket.
