When they were going to do "Doctor No", Patrick McGoohan was their first choice to play Bond. He turned them down, as he thought the character to be immoral. "Ice Station Zebra" proves that he would have been THE Bond. Nobody did smoldering, barely contained fury better than Patrick McGoohan.

He was talked into doing more episodes, so it could be sold to the U.S. market as a summer series (a common thing in the 60s).
Because of the added number of episodes, he had to pad the series out, so he did shows on subjects he always wanted to do.
He said that when the final episode was broadcast, he had to go into hiding in the hills in Ireland, because people wanted to lynch him. It was a very popular show, and people were expecting a Blofeld type villain, and they didn't get one. |
I guess the bottom line here is that Patrick wasn't really interested in doing a series in which the episodes where like chapters in a book that followed a story arc to a satisfying conclusion.
He turned the show into a buffet, with episodes that were like a series of entrees, not a meal with dishes that complimented each other.
Anyway, that's just my opinion. Now I think we should all go to lunch . . . _________________ ____________

Okay, this is definitely SPOILER territory, but if you listen to the opening narration the right way the big answer is right there from the get-go, depending on how the actor reading Number Two's line inflects it:
Six: Who are you?
Two: The new Number Two.
Six: Who is Number One?
Two: You... are Number Six.
...or...
Two: You are... Number Six. _________________ * * *
