Here's a coloring exercise I performed on my drawing of the modified-grip laser pistol.

Looks much more functional than the original.
I never could figure why props, unlike real working items, try to be more "artsy" than rational. |

But since this is a modern (futuristic) weapon rather than one designed in 1911 (Colt 45 auto), there would be all manner of sensing whether or not a hand was gripping it or pulling the trigger without the need to resort to a conventional trigger guard. |
The Colt 1911 has three safeties, one of which is a grip safety, but it still has a trigger guard. It's the U.S. Military K.I.S.S. principle, Keep-It-Simple-Stupid. Simpler is better, and less likely to malfunction.
Your LASER design is good, I like it much more than the original. The only criticism I have, is that the trigger it too long, about half the length would be better. The trigger finger has to reach the trigger without stretching, causing the hand to shift it's grip.

Yes, that works for me.

An interesting thing I once read is that they lost the formula for the green Orion Girl makeup. When Yvonne Craig appeared as an Orion, in addition to makeup, they shinned green lights on her to get her skin to be green enough. None of the later series have been able to match the color of Susan Oliver's makeup.

The TOS transporter effect is brilliant and is miles above the films, TNG, DS9 and VOY light fantastic show! Why they would alter that great fizz and vanish for a blinding light explosion is beyond me!

Agreed, Johnny! The original transporter effect looks like atoms being broken apart and whirling around! The versions on the other series and movies vary from pretty-good to over-done, but the original effect was just right! _________________ ____________

I reviewed a few transporter scenes in TNG and noticed that they pretty much used the "sparkling" effect from TOS, but with a energy "sweep" from top to bottom which preceded the sparkle.
The other shows omitted the "sparkling" portion of the effect, and it just isn't as appealing!
Here's a Youtube video which shows the effect in various shows.

There is a photo of a test for the transporter effect, where each person was a different color. I have also seen a photo where the different transporter pads were lit with different colors. I don't know if that was used in the pilot.

Good news, David! You're right!
Take a look at the first post on page one of this thread. Butch posted the picture below, with the comment "Unused transporter effect".
And Wayne replied with this next image and a comment about how the pads were different colors in the pilot episode..

OOPS! Sorry, I should have checked the first page. I guess I was just lazy, there are only two pages. But I didn't remember it, and have seen the photos on other sites.

I always preferred the terrific design for the Phaser pistol on the weekly show, still stands up beautifully today.
However, the Laser pistol design for "The Cage'' remains pretty sharp looking also. I've come to appreciate it more as the years go by.

No apologies necessary, David.
It was a legitimate "thread bumper", and when it showed up on Pow's long range sensors, he set his phaser to "post" and fired off new reply!
Speaking of which . . .

I hate to be a Trek heretic, but even though the phaser pistols are nice looking, they're just not badass enough for my taste. I'd have preferred something with a bit more weight and "attitude", like this one.
(Click to see the whole figure.)
Of course, then the crewmen would have to wear bulky holsters and walk around looking like Wyatt Earp. The holster idea wouldn't really work with the Star Trek look: light weight equipment and trim technology.
And it certainly wouldn't do well for the ladies in the miniskirts. They'd all look like Annie Oakley!
Oh well . . . _________________ ____________
