About Today's Featured Threads
The theme today is the ever-present danger of being “lost in space” — which is why we're presenting the original pilot to the sixties series and two episodes from Star Trek: TNG which addresses the same concept.
Bogmeister’s review of the first Lost In Space (1965) pilot episode praises this serious attempt at science fiction, before the series decided to lighten things a bit, something many of us regret.
Compare it to Encounter at Farpoint, the pilot episode for TNG, which actually looks a bit dated now in it’s own way.
Consider this: The Jupiter II became the Enterprise D, Robot B-9 became Data, and Will Robinson became Will Wheaton (as Wesley Crusher, of course, but it’s funnier the way I said it. )
And speaking of Wesley Crusher, in the TNG episode Where No One Has Gone Before he befriends an alien called The Traveler, who accidentally gets the Enterprise lost in space by super-charging the hyperdrive and violating the factory warranty!
So, I guess The Traveler is sort of the Dr. Smith of TNG!
