Why Don't Star Trek's Spaceships Have Seat Belts?
by Ria Misra

It would seem like a simple enough idea: If you're cruising along at warp speed through an unknown quadrant of space, it might not be such a bad idea to buckle up. So why didn't Starfleet equip their ships with seat belts? Did they simply not need them, or is the actual explanation much more sinister?

In response to this post on the most stunningly-obvious design flaws aboard the USS Enterprise, a debate began over the role of seat belts on Star Trek. Why didn't we see them? Was the explanation perhaps that a superior technology had taken their place, or was there something else going on?........

........What do you think? Was the absence of seat belts down to the superior tech of inertia dampening, or do you think Starfleet was merely slow to get behind the issue of workplace safety?

Well it is obvious. If they had seat belts, then they wouldn't be able to fall out of their chairs at dramatically appropriate times. Laughing

Besides, their chairs swivel. Can you image being strapped into one of those during violent maneuvers? You'd be like a rag doll in a Pit Bulls mouth! Shocked

David.

If they can control gravity to keep people on deck, they oughta be able to keep people in their chairs. Come to think of it, why didn't they ever disable intruders by selectively increasing the gravity on whatever decks the intruders were occupying? Or did the intruders always take over the gravity controls as well?

I would have used an inertial damping field. In which case you sit safe and sound while everything gets blown apart around you.

In the I had swivel chairs with seatbelts.

Yeah, that's probably the preferred method. A gravitational solution would likely end up pulling all your organs and blood down to your butt.

Or force evolution. The 'g' field we (and all other land animals) evolved in determined just where each organ ended up by that organ's specific gravity.

Gentlemen, we've solved the problem.

If a starship like the Enterprise or the C-57-D can protect its crew from the titanic forces of inertia, they certainly wouldn't need something as crude and ineffective as "seat belts" when the ship is experiencing motions which would slam every object in the vessel around so violent it would be pulverized! Shocked

Put electro-magnets in every seat....Then have everyone's pants lined with steel threads. (In the ladies it's the butt of their panty hose.)

Simple....On red alert the electro-magnets are automatically activated.

Gives another meaning to the nickname "Old Leadbottom".

Gord, that's brilliant! This would explain why I've always been attracted to the miniskirted gals on TOS! Mr. Green

It's cased by my magnetic personality! Laughing

Hey, here's a variation on your ide which is based on the idea that "seat belts and magnets" are perhaps too "1960"!

Instead of that, just install gravity generators — like the ones below the ship's deck plates — in all the seats! They would automatically be activated during red alerts to grab hold of the crewmen whenever the ship starts to rock-an'-roll!

However, each seat would also have a "kill switch" which the crewmen could hit whenever they needed to hop up during an emergency.
