Ah-HA! So that isn't dust that was there because Robby the Robot was neglected as a prop by the movie crew . . . it's BODY MAKEUP that was applied to make Robby the Actor look the part!

Wow, we've certainly gone from here to there with our theories about the odd look Robby has in that photograph!

I don't know what kind of paint they used on Robby, or how he was stored, but in some metallic paints, the metallic part can oxidize, become dull. The finish would need a good polishing to come back to life. That may be the case here. They just never took the time to polish Robby's finish back to a good shine.

It's been awhile since I saw this film, but as I recall Robbie had been stored in disrepair for some years when he was activated. Maybe the kid just never bothered to rag the ole off.

Robby couldn't have been in storage that long. Forbidden Planet was released in 56, and The Invisible Boy in 57. Depending on how long he was used for FP publicity, it could only have been a few months.

The reference to being in storage is from the plot of The Invisible Boy, rather than real time between movies.

The storage time also brings up a plot point. The Invisible Boy was supposedly contemporary — taking place in 1957.

The C-57-D lands at Chicago Spaceport on March 9, 2309.

The old professor (I forgot the name they gave) snagged Robby and brought him back to his time (earlier than circa 1957).

The supercomputer presumably was based upon Robby's design elements (It had info about Robby that no one else had).

The supercomputer made several changes made to itself over 29 years.

Does this indicate that Robby was in storage since 1928 (1957 minus 29 = 1928)?

If so, a heck of a lot of dust could certainly accumulate!

I admire the thinking going into these attempts to take the story in The Invisible Boy seriously, but we should bear in mind that it is essentially a comedy with a few "in jokes" about Robby's connection to Forbidden Planet thrown in.

For years I criticized the move for all the wrong reasons, but I finally figured out it was all just for laughs and I was allowing the humor to sail right over my head.

Any humor certainly went over MY head! It was mostly boring. If it was made as the original story was written — without Robby — I don't think anyone would have cared, let alone remembered it.
