China has planted its flag on the Moon, more than 50 years after the US first planted the Stars and Stripes there.
The pictures from China's National Space Administration show the five-starred Red Flag holding still on the windless lunar surface.
They were taken by a camera on the Chang'e-5 space probe before it left the Moon with rock samples on Thursday. _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |

I was more impressed when I thought the flag was larger and that it was really "planted and unfurled", the way the news reports describe it..
Actually it's about 18" high and it just "flips up" at the side of the lander. Oh well, it's the thought that counts, I guess . . .

I thought that for it to be valid, the flag had to be planted by a person. If the flag is on the lander, then it will probably not survive the exhaust from the liftoff.

Sounds like something from an episode of Space Force. The Chinese lay claim to the entire moon but the John Malkovich character tells Steve Carell’s character that their claim is invalid because the flag was only mounted on the lander and, besides, it burned up when the return stage lifted off. |

David, you got me wondering about that poor flag, so I tired to find a YouTube video that would answer your question.
I found the first one below and took this screen shot. The video states that the flag is attached to the lander and raised just before the accent stage took off.
That does indeed make me wonder if you were correct in thinking that it might get damages by the thrust.
The other videos below are interesting as well.

Former POTUS Jimmy Carter made an excellent point regarding China.
He observed that they are just about excelling in every way over the US.
Why? Because America has been involved in perpetual wars from WWII onward. Not to defend ourselves or help out another nation in dire trouble.
Our wars are all about ego, stupidity, and making banks, armaments dealers, investors very wealthy.
Hence, we pour a massive amount of the US budget into the military. A military that the current Liar-in-Chief increased with his foolish creation of the Space Force.
The money that the military-industrial-complex receives is so enormous that we have little $$$ for anything else.
Job creation, nope. Education, nope. NASA, nope. infrastructure, nope. Health Care for all, nope.
China rules, America drools. |
