I did NOT know that! And I SHOULD have . . .
Obviously all those scenes in movies that show the crewmen in the recessed area atop the sail when the sub is on the surface simply omitted a shot which showed them crawllng up through through the access tube. We just see them climb up a ladder in the area where the periscope is located, but the never show them inside the access tube.
Never!
Hence my embarrassing false assumption all these years that they were inside the sail, and the ladder lead up to hatch that opened in the recessed atop the sail.
Bu now I realize what a dopey thing that was, because the compartment which holds the periscope is FAR too large be a compart inside the sail!
Confession is good for soul. Thanks for finally setting me straight, Scot! _________________ ____________

Perhaps, but I won't hold it against you. After all, you were Air Force, not Navy! |

Thanks, but as a life-long fan of submarine movies, I'm embarrassed that I never realized the "sail" was not the bridge of the sub. _________________ ____________
