Timeless managed a second season...then got canceled for a second time.

Synopsis: The Onira-Tech Company has created a revolutionary brand new immersive reality app called Reverie. With this astounding Virtual Reality technology program, individuals can now live out their wildest dreams.

Problem: Some of these people are remaining totally absorbed within their fantasy worlds and not returning to full consciousness. They are are now going into a coma and will eventually die.

Are these people becoming addicted to their dreamscapes? Does the Reverie program have a potentially deadly malfunction to it?

Or is this a deliberate act by unknown forces with a sinister intent?

Former hostage negotiator Mara Kint, an expert on human behavior, is recruited by her former boss, who is now Onira-Tech's security chief, asks Mara for her help. Mara will have to enter into the V.R. dreams of people and rescue them...if she can. Entering the dreams of strangers will pose tremendous danger to Mara.

Mara has a Masters of psychology degree from Stanford and has trained at the F.B.I. in counterterrorism. In addition, she possesses great empathy.

She is driven to try to save these people lost in Reverie, but she is also hoping to save herself and forget the tragic dark event in her past.

Sidebar: Marvelous concept and a wonderful cast.

Having to invade the dreamscapes of various people offered a multitude of storylines for this imaginative show. And the visual effects possibilities were unlimited.

I'm hoping that one day someone could reboot this fantastic series. The idea is too great to die.

It reminds me of a short story concept I had years ago but never did anything with. It goes like this.

An old 1800s prospector wakes up one morning in his lonely shack out in the desert. In the dim light he feels around on the small bedside table until hie finds his wire-rimmed glasses, and he carefully puts them on. Then he opens the tattered curtains on the windows to let the morning sunshine in so he can fix his breakfast.

While doing so notices that he's low on groceries, so he puts on a ratty, faded hat and walks slowly down the dirt road towards the small town in the distance.

When he gets to town, he walks down the wooden sidewalk in front of the stores, nodding at the men and tipping his had to the ladies. He sees the general store across the street and starts towards it without notices a buckboard approaching rapidly.

The driver sees the old man ahead of him and hauls back on the reigns, but the horse doesn't stop in time to prevent colliding with the old man, knocking him to ground. Dazed but not badly hurt, the old man sits up while the concerned townspeople gather 'round quickly.

The old man's eyes are closed as he reaches up straighten his glasses, but he discovers that they were knocked off when he was struck. He opens his eyes so he can look around for the glass, and . . . .

. . . he's shocked to discover that he's sitting on a paved road a few feet from the grill of car, surrounded by people in modern-day clothing as they urge him to remain calm and wait for an ambulance to arrive.

The explanation for this strange opening is that the old man is actually living in a futurist world — a world in which people can wear ordinary-looking glasses that present any VR environment they choose.

The man has been living his Old West fantasy for so long that he's lost touch with reality. He's completely baffled by the sudden discovery that the year is 2063.

I think the story would end with the old man accepting the reality of the situation after being cared for and counseled for a week, but eventuality he chooses to put his VR glasses back on and go back to his quiet life in the little shack in desert.

Interesting just how prescient Gene Roddenberry was with his first Star Trek pilot, "The Cage."

Here he had alien Talosians who, through their astonishing mental capabilities could tap into the mind of humans and experience what those humans had lived through previously.

But even more than that, the Talosians could reshape what the humans experienced so that it was a different experience and not precisely the same one the humans lived through.

In time, the Talosians had become totally addicted to their mental dreams and forgotten how to maintain the fantastic technology of their planet.

In Reverie the creator of that series had humans entering a Virtual Reality world and becoming so delighted within it that they had no wish to return to their real life existence.
Even when remaining inside their dreamscapes would ultimately kill them.

I wonder if the Talosians all eventually died off with no more victims to use for their dreams?
