Journey To The Centre Of The Earth was an animated television series that ran for 17 episodes on ABC from 9/9/1967 - 8/30/1969 on Saturday mornings.
A Filmation production by Lou Scheimer and Norm Prescott.
Directed by Hal Sutherland.
Based upon the 1864 novel by Jules Verne.
Oliver Lindenbrook, his niece Cindy Lindenbrook, student Alec McEwen, and faithful guide Lars embarked on their journey to explore the Earth's interior and descend to its very center.
Competing with them was the evil doer Count Saccnusson and his hulking henchman Torg.
Each week would see the intrepid explorers encounter all manner of subterranean civilizations and dangerous creatures.
Opening narration by Ted Knight, who voices Professor Oliver Lindenbrook/Count Saccnusson.
"Long ago, a lone explorer named Arne Sacknussenn made a fantastic descent to the fabled lost kingdom of Atlantis at the Earth's core.
After many centuries, his trail was discovered by me, Professor Oliver Lindenbrook, my niece Cindy, student Alec McEwen, our faithful guide Lars and his duck Gertrude.
But we were not alone.
The evil Count Sacknussenn, last descendent of the once noble Sacknussenn family, had followed us . . . to claim the center of the Earth for his power-mad schemes. He ordered his brute-like servant, Torg, to destroy our party.
But the plan backfired, sealing the entrance forever.
And so, for us, began a desperate race to the Earth's core . . . to learn the secret of the way back. This is the story of our new journey to the center of the Earth!" |

"Journey back with us now to that bygone year of 1967, when Saturday mornings were awash with limited-animation cartoon shows for kids to watch in their pajamas while their half-awake, bleary-eyed mothers poured sugar coated cereal into plastic bowls for their children to eat on TV trays . . . so they could go back to bed."
Ah, those were the days, eh?
