Before I moved to Savannah and while working with the Army Corps of Engineers in New England, I was diving off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. The movie Jaws had recently come out. Quint’s boat the Orca was used in the filming. It was filmed at various stages to show sinking.
To accomplish this, the bottom of the hull was opened and there were cross members of the ships frame attached to half barrels. To raise and lower the ship for the various scenes they apparently could fill these half barrels with air or remove the air for the appropriate water level for the scene.
This photo shows the orca and the half barrels.

Wow! That's cool!
In effect, they turned the Orca in a submarine that never fully submerged . . . until the end of the movie! _________________ ____________

This is probably the only photo in existence, and I'm happy to share. |
