Starguard was a science fiction television concept for a weekly series created by the fantastic model builder Martin Bower.

Bower has created fantastic looking models for Space: 1999, The Day After Tomorrow A.K.A. Into Infinity, Alien (1979), Flash Gordon (1980), and Outland (1981).

Scenario: Humans use Trans-Pod starships to travel through wormholes to distant galaxies. Inside the Trans-Pod are all of the machines required for each mission.

The power for the wormhole is from an enormous crystal that was discovered beneath an ancient stone circle similar to Stone Hedge. The crystal is called Guardian and was used earlier by an ancient civilization of Earth.

The rediscovery of this crystal enables power to be harnessed and channeled to the Trans-Pod. A huge ring passes up and down over the Trans-Pod which then sends it via a wormhole to a distant planet.

That's all the information I could find out about Martin Bower's proposed series. There is a 15-minute reel that demonstrates his idea.

I couldn't find out details regarding why exactly the Trans-Pods are going through the wormhole to another planet.

Martin Bower has created some terrific models in his impressive career for both TV and films. One was the splendid looking Altares spaceship for Gerry Anderson's The Day After Tomorrow.

Martin Bower used to have a comprehensive website of his work, but it looks like it's gone now.

That Robby model looks like the one sold a few years ago for $19.95 at Walmart. Gord Green sent one to me before I even new they existed!

Without hijacking the thread; for more model goodness, check out the multipart documentary Sense of Scale. You won't be disappointed. It sheds a lot of light on what model makers go through for their art.
