This movie wasn't as funny as it should have been, but it was funnier than I expected.

The low budget prevented the special effects from being anything more than quick shots of tomatoes rolling around in stampeding herds, with the occasional shots of over-sized props being pushed from behind.

But the dialog and acting will tickle your ribs from time to time, and you have to admire the dedication of the folks behind such a wacky undertaking. Maybe somebody will take on the challenge of producing my idea for a sci-fi parody.

To get an idea of just how funny this movie can be (in parts) just watch the first 20 seconds of the trailer, which shows a very insensitive newsman interviewing a poor woman whose husband has been slain by the killer tomatoes.

Funny stuff!

The movie has great fun with advertising men: Heavenly chorus and light. "Hi, J.C. here for Teletronics. And all I have to say is, if it's good enough for my old man, then it's good enough for me".

I love the scene where a soldier walks up to a map of the U.S. and just crosses out a state.

It also has the best helicopter crash ever put on film. That's because it was a real crash. The tail rotor clipped the ground. Fortunately no one was hurt in the crash.

IMDB has several interesting trivia items for this production.

~ The helicopter crash in the early scenes was unintentional. The tail rotor blades accidentally hit the ground, causing the helicopter to spin out of control. Debris and the top rotor blades narrowly missed the police officers in the scene and the crew off camera. The pilot received minor injuries. After being pulled from the wreck,

Jack Riley and George Wilson quickly ad-libbed the rest of the scene as the wreck was set on fire. The crash of the $60,000 rented helicopter used up more of the budget than all other aspects of the film combined.

Note from me: This illustrates the old adage, "When life serves you lemons, ad-lib a scene involving lemonade!"

~ The giant ear muffs that the giant tomato is wearing at the end were actually two big bright green toilet seat covers.

Note from me: A good prop man who's looking for objects to use as props knows to look high and low — and even under himself!

~ Most of the cast had never appeared in a movie before, and several never acted again.

Note from me: This illustrates the old adage, "If at first you don't succeed . . . get out of Hollywood, you ham!"

~ The climax at the San Diego Stadium was shot in a single day, and all of the extras at the climax wore their own outfits.

Note from me: We can assume from this that anybody who showed up naked was not allowed to be in the scene.

Oh my God! Please forgive my grievous oversight!

I would be remiss in my duties if I didn't point out that fans of this cult classic refer to themselves Crabites.

These devoted fans actually cultivate large "crabgrass gardens", and they post elaborate recipes on Facebook for Crabgrass Salads!

They even send their teenage daughters off to High School proms wearing Crabgrass Corsages!

According to these imaginative individuals, the solution to world peace and the way to end global hunger would be to establish vast crabgrass mega-farms in all the desert regions around the world — and turn them into giant oases!

I can't help but think that this ambitious plan might just be the key to transforming our troubled planet into a utopia — a land of plenty, in which the world's population units in peace and harmony!

And it all happens because a humble weed held the key to mankind's salvation!

I just watched this movie last night. I know it's been out for decades and that most of you have seen it, so I thought I'd better ketchup.

This movie has a few chuckles in it, but mostly just produces and unpleasant a-roma.

Yep, I had the same beef with this mvie. They should have gotten you and me to right the script!

If they had lettuce do it, instead of those writers who just sat on their buns, the audience would have been pickled tink by the results!

Hey Bud,

I would have relished the chance to spend some thyme re-writing the script, but I was only twelve when it came out.

None-the-less I'm sure we could have mustard up a few more and funnier jokes, just as sure as the sun rises in the yeast.
