I Could NOT find any thread on this series usung the search function, I apologize if there is one.
Project U.F.O. (February 19, 1978 – July 19, 1979) that was a Mark VII production from Jack Webb (Dragnet). It's most famous episode was it's 10th episode from the first season: Sighting 4010: The Waterford Incident. "Boys at a military school become involved with a strange substance from a UFO and a hunter is attacked by a robot. (The robot is a version of the Robby the Robot.) Dr. Joyce Brothers guest stars as Dr. Paulson. It is based very loosely on the Cisco Grove UFO Encounter as reported in 1964.

Here Are 3 reference pictures. The ship that The Robot arrived in:
The Robot 3/4 from the rear:
The Robot 3/4 from the front:
The pictures are dark because it is not only a night scene bu executive producer Jack Webb wanted to keep the details vague. The cover of BANANAS Magazine:
The proposed DVD cover:
Here are some better pictures from the very old defunct board:
Essentially this is the same version of Robby that was seen in Space Academy's My Favorite Marcia:
And in the Sybil Danning 1988 movie The Phantom Planet with Robert Quarry as Prof. Strock:

Thanks for the great post Butch!
I remember this series well from '78 and '79. It had the same format as most of Jack Webb's series.
The whole two seasons of 13 episodes each is available on YouTube. You can start with the url posted above and work your way through it. _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |

I used to like this show even if nothing was ever proved! But why did they have to change the lead actor for season two? Caskey Swaim who was a John Voight clone and sounded like him stayed on but by the last few shows I think we'd had enough!

I always enjoyed Webb's various productions. He always wanted to be as accurate as possible in how a profession was depicted while also presenting entertainment.
Dragnet and Adam-12 were based upon true documented cases.
Same for Project UFO.
I first saw Jack discuss this new series on the Mike Douglas show. He told Mike that he (JW) was interested in knowing what was up there as he pointed upwards.
The series covers some intriguing cases. And the lives of those who report having alien contact is never the same. Sometimes sadly so for those individuals.
The alien spacecraft were a mix of sharp to behold,as well as not well done at all.
Yes,the FX & model work is dated now. They did the best that could be done technologically at that time on the budget they had & a tight shooting schedule.
Gene Roddenberry, a friend of JW,consulted on the show's visuals.

________________________________
Here's episode 1 of this series. I like the open narration and the simple illustrations of UFOs based on eye-witness descriptions.
The picture quality is less than perfect, but it's good enough for us to enjoy the series. Unfortunately, the provider of this first episode only seems to have eight more.

However, a YouTube member called jose luis dominguez prada has provided 26 episodes at the link below. Despite the Hispanic name of the member, the episode are in English and there aren't any Spanish subtitles.
The picture quality seems slightly better on the nine episodes at the first link above, but not by much.

"Ezekiel saw the wheel. This is the wheel he said he saw. These are Unidentified Flying Objects that people say they are seeing now.
Are they proof that we are being visited by civilizations from other stars? Or just what are they?
What you are about to see is part of a 20-year search."
This was the opening narration done by the show's producer, well known producer, director, writer, and actor Jack Webb.
Jack Webb, always a stickler for authenticity with his TV shows, spent considerable time researching actual United States Air Force files that investigated real UFO sightings.
The USAF, after twenty-two years of investigations, concluded none of the UFO reports they evaluated posed a threat to national security.
The USAF Project Blue Book which investigated UFO sightings ended in December of 1969.
Retired USAF Colonel William T.Coleman was the chief spokesman for Project Blue Book and served as a producer on "Project UFO."
Col. Coleman chased a UFO for real while flying a B-25 out of Miami in 1954.
Coleman admitted to being neither a skeptic or a believer regarding UFOs.
Brick Price, Movie Miniatures (now Wonderworks) usually provided the models for the crafts on the series.
The models were made from stock model kits available in department stores and hobby shops.
This would be the final TV series for Jack Webb & his Mark VII Limited Production Company.
Season one debuted on NBC Sunday night February 19, 1978 and ran from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm for a total of 13 episodes.
The second, and last season, premiered on Thursday evening September 9, 1978 and ran from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm, lasting for 13 episodes. |

Creator-executive producer Jack Webb "liberated" files of actual UFO cases from the Air Force under the Freedom of Information Act and accumulated over 400,000 documents (on microfilm) which detailed some 13,000 sightings.
Roughly 70 per cent of the Air Force cases were explained satisfactorily as natural phenomena. There were hoaxes, too.
But at least 12 to 15 per cent are true unknowns.

I'm putting this interesting series on my shows I'd like to see remastered. The ships could be done today via CGI so much better, just like they've done with Star Trek: TOS.
Probably will never happen, but I can dream. |

I've been kind of "binge watching" this series at bedtime! It works great! Just one episode and I'm fast asleep!
Seriously, the first season isn't bad. The main two characters come across like they're "Adam 12". The change in the prime character in season two was NOT an improvement!
Storywise it was all over the place, Some just made no sense at all! I just purchased the DVDs of the first two seasons of PROJECT BLUEBOOK from the History Channel and have started watching it. Basic storytelling is a much better approach to the same subject! _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |
