Charlton Heston as JOHN CARTER OF MARS you say?
He starred in the Cecil DeMille version in the 50's!

From THE HISTORY OF "JOHN CARTER"
"The Sequels That Never Were
Of course, the biggest tragedy was that more films weren’t made. When Stanton was still on Twitter, he shared logos for the second and third films in the series. He and Mark Andrews had already worked on the treatment and were about to send it to Chabon. Collins said that Stanton pitched her and Kitsch the second film in the series.
Everyone was excited to work together again. “He pitched it to us too, which is why it’s so heartbreaking,” Collins said. “Because it was like, oh my God. Oh my God.”
With Disney losing the rights to the property in 2014, that pitch was lost for all time.
Or was it?
Andrew Stanton revealed to us his pitch for the “John Carter” sequel, “Gods of Mars”:
“I love the idea of you were going to open with the prologue. It was going to be that every movie had a different character saying the prologue. The first one is Willem, as Tars.
The second one’s prologue narration was going to be Dejah. And it was going to give anybody that hadn’t seen the first movie a little precursor of the history that got you to this movie,” Stanton said. “Shorthand, interesting imagery, whether it was artwork or whatever.
And then you were going to reveal she was telling it to her baby. And you were going to realize, Oh my God, it’s the child. It’s Carthoris, this child of Dejah Thoris and Carter. And that story she’s telling, she’s telling the story of the father that this child will never know.”
Stanton continued: “And then her dad, Ciarán Hinds’ character, Tardos Mors, said she’s been up too long, she’s tired, let her grandfather have a moment with the child and I’ll put her to bed. Then it was going to be revealed to be Matai Shang in shapeshifting mode. And he was going to steal the baby.
And then it was going to go onto the opening credits. The next image after the opening credits was going to be Carter lying in his funeral suit in the middle of the desert, just looking like a dead body in a wake and just waking up.”
“Then he’s just going to take off his jacket like it was nothing and just start walking. And then eventually, just like out of ‘Lawrence of Arabia,’ way out in the horizon, is going to come a Thark on a thoat. And he’s going to surprise Carter by saying he knows exactly who he is and there’s been somebody looking for you.
He brings him to a camp and it’s Kantos Kan which is James Purefoy, who’d been searching forever off of any river where this guy went.
And so shocked that he’s found him. And then he says, ‘You have to get back now to heal him.’ And he gets back and you think it’s going to be a reunion, only to find out that there’s been some time between the prologue and the main credits.”
Stanton continued:
“Now Dejah’s gone missing. She’s convinced that the Therns took their child and if Carter ever comes back, she went down the River Iss to try and find him. And then, like ‘Beneath the Planet of the Apes,’ it all takes place, everybody going into the earth to find out who’s really been controlling the whole planet.
There’s a whole race down there that has been with high tech. Basically, it’s been a third world without anybody knowing it on the top of the surface and the first world’s been inside the whole time operating the air, the water, the everything to keep the world functioning. And yeah, I can keep going.” Stanton paused, then said: “But I’ve never told anybody the beginning of that. You can hold that dear.”
While all that world-building in “John Carter” ultimately bore no fruit in terms of tangible sequels from Stanton and Co., the film itself continues to endure a decade later despite its infamous reputation upon release."

John Carter is one of those rare, modern SF films that made me feel like a kid again. I liked the whole look of the movie/world and the FX are top-notch.
The only thing I didn't care for was the lead. Taylor Kitsch just doesn't have "it". He is just kind of there with no real presence. I know he was the flavor-of-the-month at the time, but I think they could have found someone with more personality for the star of (what was planned to be) a potential franchise.
It is a shame that Disney sank their fangs into the Star Wars money machine and abandoned JC in favor of an established IP. The sequel to JC sounded awesome. _________________ "Have you never wondered what it would be like to walk between the ticks and tocks of Time?" |

COULD IT BE TRUE???
Disney is about to find out whether or not a concept that didnt work as a movie will do better as a streaming show. Our trusted and proven sources tell us the House of Mouse is working on a John Carter reboot series for Disney+.
This seems like a strange move for Disney, particularly in light of recent months. Disney, like all of the other major studios who now own and operate major streaming platforms, has been canceling and cutting content as it struggles to figure out how to make its streaming service profitable.
Some critics argued that, unlike Burroughs when he wrote A Princess of Mars, today we know too much about the Red Planet to swallow a story like John Carter.
Disneys last crack at making money off this century-old franchise was with 2012s John Carter, which wound up being a massive flop. For the studio to then green light a series whose special effects needs would inflate its budget significantly is at the very least a curious decision.
Like Tarzan, John Carter originated in the mind of the late Edgar Rice Burroughs. Carter first appears in the serialized 1912 novel A Princess of Mars. A veteran of the Confederacy, Carter finds himself transported to Mars while prospecting, and the environment of the Red Planet gives him superhuman abilities.
Perhaps Disney is convinced that things have changed enough between 2012 and now to make a John Carter series a hit. When the blockbuster flopped, there were just about as many critics writing theses on why it failed as there are scientists studying the actual planet Mars.
Some critics argued that unlike Burroughs when he wrote A Princess of Mars, today we know too much about the Red Planet to swallow a story like John Carter. We know, for example, that not only would the eponymous hero not gain superpowers by being transported there, but that hed suffocate and die faster than you could say oldest franchise ever.
Perhaps the relatively underwhelming performance of series and films from Disneys larger franchises like Star Wars and Marvel is forcing the House of Mouse to look elsewhere.
Other critics offered a point that, upon reflection, makes Disneys decision to develop a John Carter series even more curious. According to the LA Times, Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) was offered the chance to direct the movie, but he turned it down because he felt George Lucas had mined A Princess of Mars too heavily with Star Wars.
In light of this, considering that Disney has not seemed to slow down in producing Star Wars series including Disney+s flagship show, The Mandalorian a John Carter project becomes even more of an interesting decision. At first glance, it would seem redundant.
For the studio to then green light a series whose special effects needs would inflate its budget significantly is at the very least a curious decision.
Perhaps the relatively underwhelming performance of series and films from Disneys larger franchises like Star Wars and Marvel is forcing the House of Mouse to look elsewhere. As soon as we know more about what Disney plans to do with the John Carter series, well make sure you know.

My guess is
Content content content.
They need to fill their website. They own it JC and have much of the CG mapped out if they choose to use it.
I kind of think it could work better as episodic TV rather than
a movie. I did like the movie and will give the series a look when it comes out. |

John Carter deserves a lot better than it got, but here's hoping the series can find a lead with more personality than the film's.
All of the studios/streamers need a lesson on what makes something "special" and that constantly spraying content into people's eyes tires them out. JC was abandoned because Disney got Star Wars and saw instant profits as favorable to building their own franchise with a little-know property.
I imagine Disney, like all of the other streaming services, didn't and don't understand the quicksand they jumped into, they just smelled money and plunged in. _________________ "Have you never wondered what it would be like to walk between the ticks and tocks of Time?" |
