I don't believe it's possible to remove the armature from a stop-motion puppet while keeping the model intact. A stop-motion model has layers of latex "muscles" laid over the metal armature and covered by whatever material is used for "skin" (or fur for apes and other mammals). In order to re-use an armature, the model has to be stripped down and destroyed. |

If so, then his Daughter had a VERY expensive doll.

Scotpens in correct, of course, about the sad fate of several Harryhausen animation models. Here's what Pow wrote on the previous page of this thread.
Pow wrote: | To save money on the budget, Ray would recycle the armatures from his other films and reuse 'em on succeeding films.
Gwangi's armature was originally used for the Ceratosaurus from "One Million B.C.; the Ornithomimus armature was from the Phororhacos from "Mysterious Island,"; and the Styracosaurus from "One Million B.C." found its armature inside the Triceratops. |
David, you asked a very interesting question.
Krel wrote: | I wounder how much a stop-motion armature for a Kong or Gwangi would weigh? |
I suspect the armature weighs about as much as double-handful of large nuts and bolts —
— and the exterior is just padding and a rubber "skin" that has to be thin so is won't inhibit the movement of the armature during the animation.
So, in addition to being a "very expensive doll", Ray's daughter also had a fairly weighty little darlin'. _________________ ____________

According to producer Charles H. Schneer, director Jim O'Connolly lost all interest in the film during the middle of production.

DYK? Composer Jerome Moross reuses his score from the showdown in Blanco Canyon from the western film The Big Country for the opening title credits of Valley of Gwangi.
Sidebar: Wonder how JM pulled that one off? I'd think there could be copyright and legal issues involved here?

By gum, I've always thought that music sounded familiar!
I saw The Big Country years ago, and a friend mine made a cassette tape for me that featured the scores from Western movies. It probably includes that score. _________________ ____________

According to Youtube which breaks all the stop-motion shots down into 5 segments, the stop-motion animation for this movie was 18 minutes and thirteen seconds. |

I concur with that, Doctor!
Many years ago, I timed the stop motion in both Gwagi and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms , and I concluded that Gwangi had a bit less than 20 minutes, while Beast only had about 7 minutes.
And yet I like The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms more than Gwangi, so Beast seems to have plenty of stop motion scenes, despite having less than half as much animation. _________________ ____________

I literally have not seen this in many, many years. I thought it was great the very first time I saw it, and have enjoyed it every time since.
It has been too many years since I have seen this and will have to revisit this terrific movie. _________________ "You look like a pooped out pinwheel."

As I've mentioned in previous posts, the clumsy dubbing of Gila Golan is a constant distraction. Charles H. Schneer should have either cast somebody who didn't need dubbing, or written Gila Golan's character in a manner which explained her accent. _________________ ____________
