My initial impression was "roller skates". But, as the article mentions, it's probably more like rollerblading. Except the "wheels" are perpendicular to the feet instead of in line with them. As with rollerblading, the feet are fixed in a specific alignment with the feet, whereas on a skateboard the rider is free to change his position around. _________________ ...or not...

You overthought it, Wayne.
The reason it's like a "boardless skateboard" is because the rider stands sideways to the direction of his motion, the way a skateboard rider does. _________________ ____________
