Terrific article on Whatculture.com as to why the JJ Abram's Trek films are not ST.
Abram's was not a fan of the series, it says. Yeah, it sure shows alright.

Where's the big mystery? Before the first one ever came out, Abrams said that he was doing a Star Wars movie. He wanted to do a Star Wars movie, but couldn't get the rights, so he decided to do a Star Trek movie as Star Wars instead.
The movies could have been great, showing the events that turned Kirk from a studious, by-the-book cadet into a thinking-man-of-action.
And also the events in Spock's career that led him to the Enterprise.
And of course what drove McCoy into space!
All this were just . . . missed opportunities.

The article which Pow mentions above certainly doesn't pull
any punches when it discusses the differences between TOS Kirk and J Abrams' Kirk.
Buckle up, folks. This is a verbal spanking if ever I've read one.
______________________________________________
This new Kirk is arrogant, cocky and insolent with no good cause. He has neither the experience nor the training to back it up.
William Shatner's Kirk had over 14 years in the field where this new version is given the keys to the fleet's flagship after barely getting off with a court martial.
Where the original Kirk was given a commendation for his Kobayashi Maru solution due to his exemplary record, the new version was within seconds of being kicked out because it was clearly the last straw. Kirk in the reboot movies is impulsive, child-like and insubordinate. He violates the Prime Directive without even caring, ignores orders with no good reason, makes dangerous decisions and seems to be devoid of the tactical awareness and dedication that the made the original Kirk the man he was.
Look at the dressing down Kirk gives to MacGuyvers in Space Seed. Can you imagine Chris Pine's man-child Kirk doing anything other than flirting with her?
In "Into Darkness", Star Fleet took his ship away frjom him and he was to be sent back to the academy — only for it to be given back to him some 15 minutes later and the whole thing forgotten about.
The new guy is not only nowhere near half the man William Shatner's Kirk was, he is not a Captain anyone would follow.

Ouch . . . I think little Chris needs to go his room and think about what's he's done until his father gets home!

Hmm....
Where to start.
Pine could have been ok if he had had some strong direction. This leads me to believe that Abrams wanted Kirk to be the way he was. I think Abrams wanted a caricature of Kirk, not Kirk. This shows he does not understand the Kirk character.
The other casting is really not bad at all.
The story, direction, art direction, and general layout of the film just plain fail. They all miss the mark by a whole quadrant.
There is no social commentary, no humanity, no ethos.
Star Trek has always been about looking at society in a mirror
in a science fiction setting. Discussing social issues in disguise.
This is why Strange New Worlds succeeds where Abrams failed.
BTW, has Abrams now tarnished both major science fiction franchises? With the exception of Rouge One none of the newSW movies are very good. |
