They were destroying unstable planets, actually. Early in the film, the ship's computer announces (in a breathy, sexy female voice): "The target planet has been destroyed. This sector is now cleared for colonization."
Presumably that means an unstable planet is a potential danger to other planets in its own solar system and beyond. Still doesn't make a whole lot of sense . . . |

Ah-ha! Thanks for the correction. The concept makes more sense than I thought.
Here's the 110 minute documentary about the making of Dark Star. I've ony watched the opening, but it seems to be clever. Perhaps I'll like it better then the movie itself.
