Survival of All or none.
One raindrop raises the sea.
Weapons are enemies, even to their owners.
Give more, take less.
Others first, self last.
Observe, listen, and learn.
Do one thing at a time.
Sing every day.
Exercise imagination.
Eat to live, don't live to eat.
Don't put out the light.
So goes the code for the world of Dinotopia.
Dinotopia was a wonderful 2002 four hour television miniseries produced by Robert Halmi, Sr. & Robert Halmi, Jr in association with the Walt Disney Company and Hallmark Entertainment.
The miniseries had a six-month shooting schedule and cost $80 million dollars. And this lavish looking production shows it.
It was first broadcast from May 12-to-the-14 on the ABC Network.
The story begins with a father taking his two teenage sons (half-brothers) on a plane trip with the father piloting.
Caught in a fierce storm the plane crashes into the ocean.
The teens wash up on the shore of a mysterious unknown continent that they come to learn in time is named Dinotopia.
Mourning the loss of their father and determined to get out of Dinotopia at first, the brothers come to be startled at the culture even though it welcomes them with open arms.
The teens are amazed to see that dinosaurs are an invaluable part of the civilization. The dinos display an intelligence and work side-by-side with the human population.
Dinotopia is a terrific miniseries boasting top~notch production values along with an engrossing story.
From the beautifully crafted cgi dinosaurs to the Waterfall City set (both practical and cgi) it's easy to see just why the TV-movie won the Emmy for Outstanding Special Effects.
Almost 20-years later the rich looking visuals remain awesome.
The story is compelling as we watch the brothers evolve over time from not really knowing one another because they grew up separately. Their natures are different and they don't truly get one another.
There is also anger and disagreements between them, and yet they grow close over the course of their adventures.
Both fall in love with the lovely daughter of the mayor of Dinotopia, Marion (Katie Carr).
As time goes by the brothers begin to accept and admire the culture of Dinotopia, eventually becoming key members of this lost world.
However, time is becoming short as the invaluable Sun Stones placed in towers throughout Dinotopia are beginning to grow dim due to their aging.
Without the critical protection of the Sun Stones the untamed dinosaurs will penetrate Waterfall City and the other outlaying communities, destroying everything in their path.
75% of the scenes required CGI.
CGI and animatronics were both utilized for depicting the dinosaurs.
The Jim Henson Creature Shop provided the animatronic dinosaurs.
Forty-two sets were constructed for Dinotopia.
The Waterfall City exterior set was built for $2.7 million dollars and was five-and-a-half acres on England's Pinewood Studios.
Dinotopia is based upon the James Gurney book.
A fun and entertaining first class production all the way. |
