The first time I saw this movie (and the first sequel, too, actually), I didn't care much for it. Movies about societies which seem to be populated by cruel and selfish people don't often appeal to me.
I can't help wondering why they don't wise up and behave themselves.
The whole idea that the wealthy class bullied the lower class with all their cruel restrictions and selfish exploitation was offensive. The fact that these grinning aristocrats gleefully watched all the suffering on television made it that much more unpleasant.
But of course it was all a careful setup for the Big Revolution that was coming, and that served to balance the scales of justice — or at least offer the promise that they would eventually be balanced.
Naturally it was nice to watch Jennifer Lawrence look lovely while she was kicking ass and making Donald Sutherland increasingly nervous by getting closer and closer to the day when his own ass would be the kickee.
All in all, the movie and its sequels is enjoyable.

I actually enjoyed this entire series, and it is one that the wife a I enjoy rewatching from time to time.
Donald Sutherland, as usual, nailed the part of a narcissistic sleezeball as only he can do. You hated and liked him all at the same time, and he was a master at these types of roles. _________________ "You look like a pooped out pinwheel."

Agreed! We enjoyed rooting for Jennifer Lawrence even more because Sutherland really needed his ass kicked. _________________ ____________

It took the Roman Empire a thousand years to go from gladiators to civility. {Some would say more than two thousand years!) _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |

That is a fact. Sutherland nailed this role so hard that we wanted to reach inside the TV set and slap the living bejeezus out of him.
Such a great talent. _________________ "You look like a pooped out pinwheel."
