I'm Karloff would have been wonderful, but I suspect that Raines was the better choice for the role. _________________ ____________

Without the use of his face or even his eyes, Claude Rains, in his movie debut, relied on dramatic poses to get the character of Griffin across in the film.

Sidebar: And Rains' magnificent voice was also vital conveying the character. It was absolutely imperative that the actor in this role had a powerful voice that could show us where he was emotionally, since the performer couldn't use his face or eyes at all.
Rains hit it out of the park.

Today the film's special effects remain startling, but in 1933 they were astonishing. |
Hit it out of the park he did!!
The Invisible Man is by far one of my favorite Universal films (it is also one of my favorite books), and even though Boris Karloff could have pulled it off, I don't think he could have delivered the way Rains did.
His dramatic body language accompanied by his voice is unmatched, and I wonder if this film would have been the same without Rains at the helm.
The FX still hold up well, and I can only imagine what the audience thought when it was released...they must have been astonished at this movie magic. _________________ "You look like a pooped out pinwheel."

Amen, Brother!
Rains' voice was, in a way, the star of the show. Even when he was not visible on screen, his perfect diction and his range of emotions created an acting tour de force.
And when he was all bandaged up and wearing the dark glasses, his vocal performance succeeded in doing what an actor's facial expressions usually do.
