I love everything about this movie, and it too was another one that scared me pretty good as a child, especially the beginning when they were going through the town looking for the space probe.

Well acted, and, IMHO, well written, the Andromeda Strain remains an excellent movie that still holds up well after all these years.

This was the first film that really brought the threat of a biomenace into popular thought.( OK, Quatermass !, THE MENACE FROM SPACE touched upon it a decade earlier.) It so much affected the popular psyche that the first couple of Moon missions concluded with the Lunarnauts being held in biocontamination units before they could be released to the environment..

Only the Apollo 11 crew were isolated and it's been suggested that the quarmtine was largely for show. That Moon landing was 1969. This movie came out in 1971. The book was out just before the Apollo 11 mission, though.

The wonderful HBO special From the Earth To Moon (hosted by Tom Hanks) show several Apollo crews quarantined, so I looked it up.

Space Center Houston website says this.

Astronauts on the Apollo 11, 12 and 14 missions were quarantined after returning from the Moon. The quarantine lasted 21 days from the time they were first exposed to lunar material.

The quarantine was imposed from an overabundance of caution in case they had returned from the Moon accompanied by potentially dangerous lunar microorganisms.
