Sometimes writers and directors just stick in things to liven up a scene, even when they're neither logical nor necessary.
The classic example: Frightened people are moving slowly through a dark, spook house. Suddenly a cat leaps out and screams like a banshee. It doesn't matter that we didn't even know a cat was around there somewhere . . . it's just real scary, right? So, the filmmakers feel free to stick it in. _________________ ____________

Darren McGavin's agent & wife, actress Kathie Browne, attempted to dissuade him from accepting the role in The Night Stalker TV-movie. They did not think it was a worthy project.
DM thought the script was quite good and decided to take a chance on the project. The rest was history. |

The Kolchak character had love interests in both of the 90-minute TV-movies. Darren McGavin, however, jettisoned the idea of having any romances for his Carl Kolchak character once the weekly show got underway.
"I'm bored with private eyes being attracted by females," DM stated. "Time to focus on the spooky, supernatural elements of the show."
This was a good call by DM. The weekly series needed to devote all its time to the monster-of-the-week plot. Distracting romances would have eaten into time better devoted to the show's premise of the paranormal. Besides, romances with the leading men on television series was indeed a cliche with every cop show, legal show, medical show, and western. Why rehash a tired trope? Go for the thrills and chills instead. |
