I took the ending as him being transported to an alternate dimension/back in time. Granted another interpretation is that the Martians took over, but they are not letting him know that people are controlled.

Wow, that bumps this movie up to a whole other level! Instead of trying to "slap patches on the plot holes", you turned them into wormholes into a parallel dimension! Shocked
