CYBORG 2087 - (1966) Fifteen years after "The Day the Earth Stood Still", Michael Rennie starred in another sci-fi tale (his third, counting "The Lost World" in 1960).

"Cyborg 2087" concerns a time traveler from the future who journeys back to 1965. His mission is to persuade a famous scientist not to invent a mind-control device which will make it possible for a world dictatorship to enslave mankind in 2087 A.D.

Eduard Franz ("The Thing from Another World") plays the scientist. Karen Steele ("Star Trek: Mudd's Women")is the attractive heroine. Warren Stevens ("Forbidden Planet") is the hero, and Wendell Corey ("The Astro-Zombies") is the thick-headed local sheriff who struts around talking like someone out of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof".

The music by Paul Dunlap is annoyingly repetitive. Rennie lends plenty of class and dignity to his role, but the low budget detracts from the film's enjoyment. It was originally made for TV (and it shows). Directed by Franklin Adreon from a screenplay by Arthur C. Pierce.

'Michael Rennie's stun gun was a Topper Multi-Pistol 09. The Trackers LASER pistols were stock REMCO Hamilton's Invaders Grenade Pistol. I had both toys as a kid.

I read in Filmfax that the time machine prop was suppose to have originally been the elevator from "Destination Inner Space".

Bud and I watched Cyborg 2087 today. That reminded me that 2 and one-half years ago I posted the following question to IMDB about this movie:

Actually I figured out that the question has no clear answer — and that the movie is much better than I thought, because it poses such an interesting problem.

Consider this.

Garth (Micheal Rennie, the cyborg from the future) and the professor (Eduard Franz) left for the future near the end of the story, and this caused the time line to alter from that moment forward, because the professor did not release his invention that allowed the future dictatorship to control people's minds.

In the "new" future this created , Garth may or may not still exist — but even if he did, he wouldn't remember going back in time himself, because the future no longer was a bad place that needed fixing, so he was never sent back in time to fix it.

In fact, nobody in the future would know how the professor even got there!

Furthermore, the professor might not even be there — because if the future is all fixed up, Garth wouldn't need to go back and get him!

But if Garth didn't go back and get him, then the future didn't get changed — so Garth DID go back and get him, which means . . .

Crap. I'm getting shingles and hives from pondering this. Let's look at it the other way.

If the professor did arrive in the future and it was changed for the better because he left the present before releasing his mind control invention to the government here, he'd have to convince the future folks that Garth brought him from the past to prevent a tragedy caused by his invention. He would argue that his presence there in the new-and-improved future proves that the problem has been solved.

Never mind the fact that nobody in the future knows anything about the other time line with the bad mind controlling government. The only thing they know is that some old guy appeared out of nowhere and claims he needs a ride home.

Obviously they obliged him on that, because he shows up back in 1966 at the meeting with the government officials the next morning after he left with Garth, and he tells a group of generals that his invention is too dangerous and they can't have it.

Being good American generals who always do the right and moral thing, so they just accept this bad news and leave politely.

Seriously. That's what these high ranking military guys do.

As for the "future people" who politely brought the professor back home after his visit with them, it's amazing that they were willing to risk the possibility that he would release the invention and cause the bad future to happen anyway.

You know, like it did before.

I mean, like it did after.

oh hell, I don't know whatI mean!

Okay, let's try it this way. Maybe the future guys consulted their history books (a new history, rewritten by the new time line) and found out that the professor was responsible for important scientific discoveries after the date of the Garth incident in 1966.

But that, of course, means they had no choice but to take him back, because if they chose not to, their history books would be all wrong — which is ridiculous.

So, there you have it, guys. One of the best time travel paradoxes ever presented in a sci-fi movie — a very cheap and poorly done sci-fi movie at that.

— except for the painting we see of a gorgeous futuristic city in the opening credits. It's a beauty!

The trailer for this film is wonderfully dramatic, and you get to see Jo Ann Pflug at the beginning (briefly), the lovely lady who stole our hearts with her small role in M.A.S.H. (the movie).
