A mixture of live-action, stop-motion animation, and the strange overall look of 19th century engravings, due to the heavy (and skilled) use of matt paintings.
If you have a taste for stop-motion animation, this film is a feast. The story isn't really from a Verne novel, its more of a conglomerate of Verne-ish elements (submarines, lighter-than-air ships, giant squids, etc.), loosely tied into a story.
Strange to watch, but interesting and undeniably unique. The American release version features an opening narration by Hugh Downs. Directed by Karel Zeman from a screenplay by Zeman and Frantisek Hrubin. In 1961 Zeman directed the Czech version of "The Fabulous Baron Munchausen".

The Fabulous World of Jules Verne (Czech: Vyn??lez Zk??zy, literally The Deadly Invention or An Invention for Destruction) is a 1958 movie with many fantastic Victorian designs. Here is a paper model of one of the submarines:

In Bill Warren's interesting book Keep Watching The Skies which examines sf films, he cites TFWOJV as one of the finest sf movies ever created.
I remember my folks taking me to see it as a kid. I found it weird at first, certainly unlike any movie that I had ever seen artistically. However, I soon became entranced by it because it was unique.
My poor parents must have suffered throughout it.

Good news! Youtube has a 963 MB version of the movie with English subtitles. The picture quality is excellent!
The running time according to IMDB's listing is 1:23 (83 minutes.) The running time on the video below is 1:18, a five minute difference..

Bulldogtrekker and I watched it tonight, and we were disappointed. The story isn't very good, and the damn subtitles flash on and off so fast I couldn't keep up with them. That was especially bad with this movie, because while I was struggling to speed read the flashing subtitles, I was missing a ton of nifty special effects racing past!
As I've stated in the past, subtitles are just annoying to me, anyway. Hell, if I wanted to read, I'd turn off the TV and grab a book!
Anyway, don't expect an engaging story from this movie, but if you love stop motion, it's a feast!

I can only imagine how much cooler The Wild Wild West TV show would have looked if they had been able to employ the visual techniques utilized in this film.
However, on a TV budget & weekly shooting schedule such a reality could never have happened.

Although I'm not sure using the techniques in The Fabulous World of Jules Verne would be be best way to go, your suggestion does conjure up some great mental images of a new remake of The Wild, Wild West with a wild, wild "steampunk" approach which succeeded in doing what the show never did — complete with the wild, wild world of James Bond and all his marvelous hi-tech tools of the trade.
All the show did was hint at this idea, but a really Vernian version of a steampunk world in which Jim West and Artemus Gordon are loaded with marvelous devices would be a lot of fun! _________________ ____________

Well, the techniques utilized by TFWOJV as applied to TWWW would have been restricted to specific scenes in my mind, Bud.
If one could have done so it would have been scenes involving the villain of the week's astonishing lair, submarines, flying machines, & so forth.
To have turned every scene into some elaborate scene like the movie would have been too jarring I think for most folks.
The shooting of the real train, wild west backlot towns, secret service office, & such items would have best been done just as they were done on the tv show.
I think many times when they attempt to revive a tv series from the past the results often fall flat. Even with all or some of the original cast members. TV shows are often a product of their times & hostage to it.
However, I always felt that TWWW might be one of those rare exceptions (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica) that just might be as much fun today as the 60s version.
And with today's CGI, Virtual Sets, sophisticated make-ups, animatronics this new WWW could go places that the original was unable to back in its day.

I suspect that many people would overlook the images as links because they don't look like what people are expecting to see (a text string listing a URL). One is required to read the text preceding the images in a post to determine if they're links or just small images. _________________ ...or not...
