Do any of the artists members have any ideas of what the house would look like with Christmas lights on the outside? _________________ ____________

You're welcome. Making it was fun. I figure the swimming pool can be artificially frozen anytime Altaira wants to, so she can ice skate on it!
I used Paint.net to "invert the colors" of the matte painting, then pasted in the house with normal colors. I raised the brightness on certain areas that were dark blue in the inverted version, to make them look like blue snow.
I found a painting that had a few snow-covered ferns and pasted them in. I found a beautiful landscape and borrowed the gorgeous sky (after dialing up the brightness on it).
It took a few hours, but I loved every minute of it. _________________ ____________

A great work of art that deserves to be included in any Forbidden Planet prequel! _________________ Common Sense ISN'T Common |

Back on page 70 Krel made the comment below about Sci-Fi Steve’s video tour of the C-57-D (on page 69) and how it just didn’t seem possible that the ship could accommodate more than a few survivors from the Bellerophon, if there had been any.
Krel wrote: | Bud, I've seen that video, but I don't buy it. The C-57-D is too small to hold a large number of passengers. The ship would have to have fantastic life support and recycling systems just for the number of crew it has.
They were hoping to find survivors, but after 20 years of no contact, I don't think Earth expected them to find any, or they would have sent a larger ship. |
He has a good point, of course.
And yet while watching Forbidden Planet on TCM today I noticed (again) that while the ship is still in space, Adams tells the crew that their mission is "to search for survivors."
And then, after the lunch scene, Adams tells Morbius this.
"My orders don't seem to cover the Bellerophon fatalities. I'm forced to contact Earth base for new instructions."
That's a very puzzling comment.
If the C-57-D was only sent to investigate the disappearance of the Bellerophon, and Earth base really didn't think there were survivors, why would Adams have to call Earth to report that they were right? (With only one exception. Morbius.)
Isn't that pretty much what Earth expected?
And remember, Adams doesn't say "My orders don't seem to cover the fact that we found survivors." He says his orders don't cover the fatalities.
All things considered, it actually sounds like Earth expect the poor little C-57-D to take back all the scientists, along with the kids they might have acquired over the last twenty years.
If that's the cause, Krel is right. They're gonna need a bigger boat. I mean . . . ship.
But I still don't get why Adam's felt the need to contact Earth. You'd think his orders would have said something like, "If they're all dead, try to find out what happened. And if anybody survived, bring them back."
So, I can't help wondering what Adams wanted to report that couldn't have waited until they got back home?
One last little mystery I've pondered from time to time. What is this little gizmo on the side table in the scene when Doc dies?
It appears earlier, sitting on the corner of the dinner table when the monkey tries to steal the piece of fruit. In fact, when Robby zaps the little simian, he slides across the table and knocks the gizmo to the floor.
Until I watched the movie on TCM today I had always assumed the object that fell to the floor was the piece of fruit the monkey was holding when Robby zapped him.
At first I wondered if it might be the beamer, but it's not. The beamer is an egg-shaped object on three slender legs. So, what the heck is this little object with a round base and a knobby clear plastic top? _________________ ____________

Oh, of course! I think you told me that once before, but I forgot!
But that means Morbius was a bit reckless to leave it on the dinner table where the monkey might hit it and activate the shutters! What if both he and Altaira were outside when that happened! _________________ ____________

Looks like an air hockey - “paddle” ? Maybe Moebius used it to control the shutters too.

Good Lord, Eadie, you've done it again!
That article is intelligent, comprehensive, and beautifully written! The synopsis of Forbidden Planet is like Mary Poppins — Practically Perfect in Every Way!
The analysis of the dangers of a Great Machine like the Krell's is stunning. It encompasses everything I've ever thought of on the subject, and quite a lot more besides.
Please tell your teacher that we are very grateful to him-or-her for calling your attention to the article, and we're very glad you shared it with us.
Eadie, I hope you'll also consider showing your teacher what I said about you recently in Contact All Sci-Fi. I want your teacher to know that you've been a valuable member of this board for over ten years, and that you've frequently passed on fascinating information to our members.
Please nvite your teacher to visit All Sci-Fi to see more examples of how her star pupil is keeping all of us well educated! _________________ ____________

An interesting article at:
https://brandimidkiff.com/tag/1950s/
about Robby!
(There are also several articles following that are part of the same speculation!) _________________ ____________

Wow! That article does some very original thinking on the subject of Forbidden Planet and The Invisible Boy in relation to how Robby might actually the same robot/character in both movies.
I read the second article, too.
Thanks, Eadie! _________________ ____________

Read them all, Thanks for the link!
The first article really made me think about just how much "free will " and real emotionality Robby really had.
Morbius said "Don't apply any emotions to him, he's simply an automaton." (To paraphrase.) Yet, there seemed to be an underlying level of "personality" and feelings to him. This article outlines it very well.
The experience with the cook and the booze really showed quite a bit about the "real" Robby. There was more going on than what showed on the surface.
He detected the "planetary force" and knew it was Morbius's subconscious (from his reaction when Morbius ordered him to kill it and deactivated himself.) and told the cook that it was not "coming this way.".
Perhaps it could be argued that Robby's knowledge was located in his subconscious.....or perhaps a subroutine in his programed memory.
In any regard, Robby knew that the deadly planetary force was connected to Morbius yet he never let on or told anyone.
Maybe he showed favoritism toward the cook (He did act in a friendly manner....Maybe Robby was lonely!) when he kept him away from the ship while the ID was on the prowl.
FORBIDDEN PLANET never fails to bring up more and more areas of discussion. It may not have been Cyril Humes intent…..He just wanted to write a story that would sell! _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |
